In the summer of 2019 the Rothbury Post Office on Bridge Street closed its doors and a new Post Office opened inside the newsagent`s shop on Front Street. Easier access, granted, for those of us unable to negotiate the steps at the former premises - eg, wheelchair users, the elderly, infirm etc. However, with the closure of the old Post Office, we are now one letterbox down! The `letterbox` referred to is that which to this very day remains in situ, outside of the old Post Office building, built into the actual wall, the stone wall. Useless now though, its coat of post-office-red having been painted over funereal black, and the slot where we`d post our letters - that`s been blanked off - sealed, shut!
So, the powers that be, the Post Office/Royal Mail - two separate identities apparently (tell that to the people who wrote the phone book for BT) provided the residents of Rothbury with a new Post Office, but in the process they left us minus one posting facility! One less letterbox/pillarbox - call it what you will...
Why does this matter?
More anon.
